Keeping Your Cool When the Kids Are Losing Theirs

Audience: Parents and Professionals

It’s easy to be an effective parent or professional when you’re cool, calm, and collected. Slowing down and working with a child isn’t too difficult when you’ve actually had eight hours of sleep and aren’t rushed. Unfortunately, those moments are rare. The challenge is to keep your cool even when the kids are screaming, “You’re not my boss!” or when you’ve given them five choices and NONE of them are acceptable or when, despite a ten-minute warning, they’re about to be late again.

Learning to calm one’s self is an essential life skill. In order to teach it to children, we have to be able to do it for ourselves.
